About Us

The Long Island Science Center, a not for profit 501(c)3 organization, encourages enthusiasm and excitement for learning and stimulates discovery, inquiry and creativity. Interactive exhibits and demonstrations, and both in-house and out reach programs, enhance the discovery process for visitors regardless of age or background - This "learning by doing philosophy " underpins the Science Center's programs and exhibits. As people freely explore the materials and activities available, they become empowered and motivated to learn more.

Our Partnerships

The Long Island Science Center has established partnerships with twenty-five Long Island school districts and works with BOCES, 4-H clubs, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and the American Association of University Women. We offer in-service courses for teachers and internships for middle school, high school and college students. The Science Center collaborates and offers shared services with other community organizations such as the Arts Council, Railroad Museum and the Historical Society. The museum is an active member of science and museum associations, ASTC, AAM, MAAM and LIMA, The museum works closely with Brookhaven National Lab, Cornell Cooperative and Suffolk County Community College. The Science Center director serves as treasurer of the LI Museum Association, is co-chair of the committee for Gender Equity of the L I Fund for Women and Girls and is on the Riverhead CSD Business Advisory Board.

Empowering our Workforce

The Long Island Science Center feels strongly that an understanding of science, math and technology and the scientific method is important for all people. The Science Center believes that building a more informed and skilled workforce is the responsibility of the entire community. The Science Center promotes reaching out to children at an early age and demonstrating to them that what they are learning has practical application. With that in mind, the Science Center programs discuss present day fields of study and refer to male and female scientists and inventors from all cultures and backgrounds. We also realize that certain skills are needed regardless of what career path is chosen. The Science Center exhibits and programs, provides opportunities for people to practice those skills listed below and get excited about learning.

HANDS-ON DISCOVERY - EXPLORATION - EXPERIMENTATION

PROBLEM SOLVING AND LOGICAL AND DEDUCTIVE THINKING

EXPANDING THEIR IMAGINATION AND DEVELOPING AND TESTING HYPOTHESIS

LEARNING TO SHARE AND WORK IN TEAMS

COMBINING THEORY AND PRACTICE

Applying the Learning by Doing Philosophy

The Long Island Science Center hosts Camp Invention at school districts throughout the summer. Students in second through sixth grades participate in five interactive units based on real life scenarios. They become immersed in a project, problem solve and create a solution. This experience helps prepare them to tackle real life situations.

The Science Center designs and presents programs that address life skill requirements to scout and 4 -H groups. The programs focus on gaining knowledge of the physical and natural world and practical hands-on experience

The Science Center presents teacher workshops and offers in-service credit for these courses. These workshops focus on teaching education staff how to incorporate into their lesson plans the work skills required to process, interpret and apply information.

The Science Center, through our science fair help workshops, prepare students and parents to use the scientific method in designing their projects. These research skills are then transferable to all work experiences.

The Science Center offers special science workshops for women and girls. Realizing the need to encourage women to participate in the areas of science, math and technology, the Science Centers strengthens their knowledge base in a supportive environment. Equally stressed are the skills of experimenting. designing, creating and testing a product This form puts practical experience at their disposal and gives them a competitive edge. The Science Center provides internships in a variety of ways.

Through our summer camp program counselors fourteen years and older, work closely with teachers and campers, assisting and encouraging the participants and earn a small salary. Children twelve to thirteen can work as junior counselors.

Through our summer museum intern program, children fourteen to sixteen years of age can work behind the scenes creating exhibits and programs and can work with museum visitors in the galleries. Interns, who have completed our program, can work for the museum on the weekends and during the summer earning a small salary.

Individual internships are available for high school and college students. They work one on one with museum staff. Students with a special interest in science can work with a mentor through the museum. Working with Suffolk Community College, we provide internships for their students in their therapeutic and early childhood program. Interns who have satisfactorily completed their studies can serve as assistant teachers.
