School Programs (2007-2008) LISC provides science programs that target critical needs in school science curricula. Teachers can choose from a large variety of school field trips and in-school presentations. These special programs were developed in consultation with scientists from Brookhaven National Lab, SUNY Stony Brook, The Long Island Pine Barrens Society, and the Dinosaur Society. Programs were piloted and proven at Shoreham/Wading River Elementary Schools and are continuously evaluated by the board. All of the programs are designed to meet various portions of the elementary school standards outlined in "Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science and Technology" issued by the New York State Education Department. LISC has served school children from nearly every school district in Suffolk County. Children, like scientists, learn and discover through "hands-on interaction with their environment. This learning by doing philosophy underpins all LISC programs and exhibits. As children freely explore the materials and activities presented, they are empowered and motivated to learn more! As part of the program, children also explore the Science Center exhibits, and observe a collection of exotic animals in the Rainforest Exhibit. Any program offered by the LISC can be successfully adapted to suit any grade level. Most programs can be presented at your site or at the LISC. LISC offers BOCES supported teacher in-service workshops. Teachers can attend a series of classes and gain knowledge of a specific subject or attend sessions that address how to teach science through investigation and discovery. |
